MSI OCULUX NXG253R Review

The MSI OCULUX NXG253R is an amazing piece of computer hardware that any user would be more than happy to have, as it provides top-tier performance, incredible 360Hz refresh rates, 1ms (grey to grey) response times, and a minimalistic and ergonomic design, that makes it easy and comfortable to use and live with.

MSI OCULUX NXG253R Overview:

The overall purpose of a monitor is to display the information being processed inside your computer in a form that can be understood by users. However, with the progress of time, what this means has evolved from referring to general-purpose tasks to advanced content creating and gaming, and to be able to actually see and appreciate the performance of modern gaming systems, and to take full advantage of the amazing refresh rates and low response time that our systems are capable of putting out, we need specialized or gaming monitors.

Gaming monitors are high-performance monitors that are not only capable of displaying the performance of a system, but also enhance the user experience with vast color pallets, amazing depth perception, and wide viewing angles. That being said, the incredible performance of these monitors does not come cheap, as they are relatively very expensive when compared to normal everyday monitors.

So it is better to simply view monitors that can push about 360Hz refresh rates and insanely low response times, as an investment and should be made only by individuals who are willing to invest in their gaming set-up and want a premium experience over everything else.

Whereas, most normal 144Hz to 240Hz, refresh rate monitors are good enough for most casual gamers and some competitive gamers that are simply not willing to invest so much money into one product.

The company was first founded back in 1986 as a computer hardware company, with Joseph Hsu, Jeans Huang, Frank Lin, Kenny Yu, and Henry Lu as the founders. Over the years, the company has solidified its place as the provider of the world’s best gaming equipment, hardware, and accessories, while also partnering with other companies to try and expand beyond just the computer hardware market by creating exciting new gaming smartphones and other electronic devices. However, they have yet to produce anything that became mainstream or highly sought after in those markets.

That being said, the MSI OCULUX NXG253R is a prime example of what MSI does best. As it is a competitive gaming-focused product that truly gives its user a winning edge over their opponents during any competition. It accomplishes its high performance by perfecting and synchronizing various technologies and features to ensure a streamlined flow of things and enhance the user experience.

The main things that are determined by viewing the specifications of this monitor are:

Image Quality:

The main purpose of any monitor is to provide a means of viewing the images generated by the processor of the system, and for this purpose, the MSI OCULUX NXG253R is fitted with an IPS display panel that is able to provide as low as 1ms (grey to grey) response time speed. These factors not only ensure that the display is capable of providing users with vibrant and accurate colors, but also with wide viewing angles for maximum comfort, and will also not have to face any sort of ghosting during fast-paced gaming sessions.

Color:

These days gaming monitors need to have attractive colors at their disposal, as bland or unnatural colors tend to only push away potential buyers, as they look unrealistic. Most monitors that are direct competitors of this monitor are capable of producing about 16.7 million different colors, which is very impressive, however, MSI has taken things to the next level, as this monitor has 1.07 billion colors at its disposal. This enables it to generate even more vibrant and punchy images that not only enhance user experience but also allow for users to delve into and focus on what they are doing, instead of getting distracted.

Angles:

Viewing angles determine just how comfortable users are able to get while using a monitor, as they need to be able to clearly see what is happening on their screen at all times. For this purpose, MSI has ensured that this monitor has viewing angles from 178° vertically and 178° horizontally.

Furthermore, the stand that comes with this monitor is not just for show, as it is also very adjustable. It provides tilt adjustment from -5° to 20°, swivel adjustment from -45° to 45°, pivot adjustment from -90° to 90°, and lastly height adjustment from 0 to 130mm. To ensure that users are able to get into their optimum viewing position without any difficulties or compromises.

Resolution:

This monitor features 1920×1080 (FHD), meaning that it is capable of producing sharp and crisp images at 1080p with a 360Hz refresh rate. However, this is not that impressive, until you remember the fact that it uses an IPS display to push out this resolution since it is more difficult to do with an IPS display, as it does not compromise on viewing angles or on its color gamut. Overall, the monitor provides a deeper and clearer sense of details and depth perception.

Performance:

The general performance of the monitor determines if the monitor is built strong enough to be able to put out consistent performance whenever it is required to. To do this, the monitor’s real-world capabilities are put to the test to see if they live up to expected standards since companies often overstate the capabilities of their products. However, this is not the case for this gaming monitor as it does indeed perform in the real world just as it is expected to.

Furthermore, given that this monitor has a refresh rate of 360 Hz, it is unlikely that performance will ever be a problem, as this monitor also comes with a variety of features to help further improve performance and enhance the user experience.

Features:

The incredible performance of the MSI OCULUX NXG253R is only possible because the developers of this product have fitted it with a ton of features that work in harmony and improve the overall user experience beyond expectations. Some of the features used by this gaming monitor are:

  • The NVIDIA G-SYNC, which basically adjusts refresh rates between the monitor and the system to prevent screen tearing or stuttering. As a result of which the monitor is able to produce ultra-smooth lag-free gameplays.
  • MSI’s own version of Fast IPS known as Rapid IPS, this technology is roughly 4 times fast than traditional IPS displays and provides 1ms (grey to grey) fast response time, as well as optimized screen colors and brightness levels.
  • The entire reason why this display stands out is the fact that it can provide 360Hz Extremely High Refresh Rates, which means that users are able to experience faster responses with smoother frames.
  • As mentioned, the Rapid IPS display enables1ms GTG Response Time, which pretty much eliminates any chance of getting screen tearing or choppy frame rates.
  • It also uses the NVIDIA Reflex Latency Analyzer, which is a software program that gives users an accurate measurement of system latency, and various other aspects of the system.
  • It has been fitted with ULMB (Ultra Low Motion Blur), which fixes the problem of various objects getting blurred as a result of fast movements, by providing silky-smooth and crystal-clear moving objects.
  • It features a sleek and stylish, adjustable stand for user comfort purposes, as it enables users to be able to easily change the position of the monitor for enhanced user comfort and maximum ergonomics.
  • Finally, MSI has taken into consideration the fact that most computer screens are generally not great for the user’s eyes as consistent Blue Light puts a lot of stress on them. This stress can lead to problems and discomfort in the short run, but in the long run, can actually damage the user’s eyesight as well. So to limit this issue, they have introduced Anti-Flicker and Less Blue Light in this monitor, and this allows for longer gaming sessions and prevents eye strain, as well as fatigue.

Design & Connectivity:

As expected, MSI has so far hit a homerun with the MSI OCULUX NXG253R in terms of performance, features, and user experience. However, there is more to computer hardware nowadays than just performance and stats. We live in a time where, to some people, the overall design and looks of a device matter just as much as its performance. Like just about everything from RAM modules, to keyboards feature various design elements such as curves/edges, RGB lights, and an overall theme.

Also with companies trying to make new products look futuristic and sleek, there is a growing concern about the fact that monitors are starting to feature fewer and fewer connectivity options, which is a serious problem for people who have a lot of devices that they want to conveniently connect to their display, instead of reaching behind the main system housing.

Fortunately, MSI has been in the computer hardware business long enough to understand both of these concerns and is well known for making products that not only perform well enough to be used by most professional E-sports gamers but also have both stunning designs and abundant connectivity options.

Design:

In terms of design, the front of the MSI OCULUX NXG253R features a very clean and minimalistic-looking display with no real bezels and a nearly frameless surrounding. Whereas, the back of the monitor is a whole different story, as it features many cool design elements. The back is horizontally split with the bottom half being very clean, with MSI engraved in silver on it. While the top half has a different texture, which looks like black brushed aluminum, and on the top right side, you can see the iconic MSI dragon logo, whereas on the other side you can see NVIDIA, G-SYNC, and 360 written above the RGB lighting strip. Speaking of the RGB lighting strip, MSI has stepped away from making it too loud and flamboyant and instead have done with a more subtle setup, however, it does features MSI’s mystic lighting and so users are able to set the ambient lighting to be anything they want. Furthermore, directly below the RGB lighting, there is a vent to allow airflow out from the monitor to ensure that it runs at optimum temperatures at all times.

Practicality:

To enhance the practicality of this monitor, MSI has designed it to look very sleek and minimalistic, to enable it to not take up too much space. They also made it possible for users to mount it to the specific stand that comes as a stand with it in the box, since this stand is designed to enable it to be positioned in whatever way is most comfortable for the user or if a user just wants it flat on a wall then they can use it on any VESA compatible wall mount. Making it easy for you to set it up just the way you want it.

Connectivity:

Monitor
OPTIX-MAG274

As mentioned, with monitors becoming sleeker and thinner than ever, users are constantly concerned about the connectivity options that they come with, as connecting multiple devices to the back of your main system housing is not only difficult but also looks very messy. Fortunately, the MSI OCULUX NXG253R does not have this problem, and in fact, is even more convenient than most other gaming monitors. It features 3 USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-A ports on the left side of the monitor for user convenient access. While on its lower back, it features 1 Display Port (1.4), 2 HDMI (2.0b) ports, 1 USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type B port, and lastly a single Earphone out.

Price & Similar Monitors:

As expected of a 360Hz refresh rate gaming monitor, the MSI OCULUX NXG253R is anything but affordable, as it provides top-tier performance that is on par with the other most mainstream gaming monitors out there such as the Alienware 25 AW2521H 360Hz or the ASUS ROG Swift 360Hz PG259QNR. The only real difference between them is of looks and aesthetics, and that depends on a user’s own preferences.

Summary

Overall, the MSI OCULUX NXG253R is an amazing piece of computer hardware that any user would be more than happy to have, as it provides top-tier performance, incredible 360Hz refresh rates, 1ms (grey to grey) response times, and a minimalistic and ergonomic design, that makes it easy and comfortable to use and live with.

4.3

That being said, the price that it comes at is far too steep for most people to justify buying it, as it is meant for only professional gamers and game streamers, for whom it is an investment into their career rather than a new toy to play with. Most casual or even semi-competitive gamers would much rather save their money and buy 144Hz or 240Hz refresh rate monitors as they more than get the job done.
